How We Grade Every Pair: Inside the Sole Story Condition System

Every pair on Sole Story is second-hand — but "second-hand" tells you almost nothing on its own. A shoe worn twice and kept in its box is a completely different product from one that saw a full summer of daily wear, even if they're the same model in the same size. That gap is exactly where most online resale goes wrong: you order a "used" shoe and have no idea what's actually going to arrive.

So we don't sell "used." We sell a grade. Every pair is inspected by hand and placed on a simple four-step scale, and the grade is stated plainly on the product page next to the price. No guessing, no surprises. Here's exactly what each one means — and how to choose.

Premium+ — practically new

The top of the ladder. These have either never been worn outdoors or were tried on a handful of times at most. Expect no creasing, no visible sole wear, and the original shape fully intact. Boxes and extras are often still included. If you want that fresh-out-the-box feeling without paying full retail, Premium+ is your grade — it's as close to brand-new as pre-owned gets.

Premium — lightly worn, beautifully kept

Worn, but with obvious care. Under strong light you might catch the faintest toe crease, but the sole, upper and colour are all still crisp and clean. Once they're on your feet, the vast majority of people could never tell a Premium pair from a new one. This is the grade for buyers who want "as good as new" but are happy to skip the last few percent of perfection for a better price.

Excellent — honest wear, great value

Genuinely good condition with normal, honest signs of use — light creasing across the toe box, a little softening in the sole, maybe a faint mark or two. Nothing that affects how the shoe fits, feels or lasts. Excellent is the sweet spot for most shoppers: a clear step down in price, a barely noticeable step down in looks.

Good — well-worn, still solid

These have clearly been worn and it shows — visible creasing, noticeable sole wear — but they remain structurally sound, clean and ready for plenty more miles. Good is priced to match, which makes it the smartest way into a grail pair or a premium silhouette without the premium price tag. Perfect for daily beaters and first-time buyers testing the waters.

What every grade has in common

The grade describes how a shoe looks — but the checks underneath are the same for all four. Before anything reaches the site, every pair is:

• Authenticated — inspected against known markers so you never buy a replica by accident.
• Cleaned and deodorised — so it arrives fresh, not just "wiped down."
• Checked for structure — soles, stitching and midsoles examined for any hidden damage or separation.
• Photographed as the real pair — the images you see are the exact shoes you'll receive, never a stock photo.

So which grade should you buy?

If you want it to feel brand-new, go Premium+ or Premium. If you care most about value and don't mind honest wear, Excellent and Good will stretch your money furthest. And whichever way you lean, the grade on the page is a promise — not marketing.
